Originally a port city, Marquette’s biggest attraction, the Lower Harbor Iron Ore Dock, was built in 1902 by the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company and operated until 1965 when it was officially closed due to a decrease in iron ore shipments. The ore dock is constructed from limestone blocks that were transported from nearby Trap Rock Island. It’s one of only two remaining docks in Marquette’s harbor, with the other being located at the Upper Harbor Park.
Today, visitors can explore the historic site as well as enjoy an array of outdoor activities, such as swimming, fishing, kayaking, and picnicking. There are also several trails located throughout the area that are open for hiking or biking. Visitors can also take time to appreciate Lake Superior’s unique beauty. It’s one of North America's largest freshwater lakes and offers unparalleled sightseeing opportunities.
