Elegant, extravagant and located just west of downtown Paris, the affluent suburban neighborhood of Versailles brings France’s fascinating history to life. Home to the royals until the French Revolution, today the area’s Palace of Versailles and its beautiful gardens are just one of the many highlights you don’t want to miss in this quintessentially French enclave.
EAT
With thousands of visitors descending daily, it's no surprise that Versailles has nearly every kind of cuisine to choose from. Try:
- Restaurant Angelina: A traditional tearoom serving savory treats and pretty pastries on the first floor of the Palace of Versailles. Don't skip Louis XV’s favorite drink, a hot chocolate.
- Gordon Ramsay au Trianon: Overlooking the country estate of Versailles, experience Michelin-starred dining through a refined five- or seven-course menu and optional wine pairing. Highlights include wild turbot with mushrooms, clams and marinière jus along and an herb sorbet to top it all off.
- La Place: Ideal for a casual bite but still in a prime location on Rue Colbert, this trendy cafe serves up Breton-style crepes, including La Caramelle, which is drenched in homemade salted butter caramel.
SEE
You'll want to spend your time in Versailles focusing on the main attraction: the palace and its landscaped gardens, villas and stables which are spread over more than 2,000 acres (800 hectares). Explore:
- The Palace of Versailles: Experience Louis XIV's extravagant 17th-century home, built when the French royals were at their most powerful. The most famous room is the spectacular Hall of Mirrors where the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, was signed.
- The Queen's Hamlet: Stroll through this scenic thatched-roof village with a windmill and pond. Never inhabited, this quaint bourg was built in the Trianon Gardens entirely for the entertainment of Queen Marie Antoinette.
- The Gallery of Coaches: Located in the Great Stables on the Versailles estate, the Gallery of Coaches offers insight into how royals once traveled, with lavish gold-adorned coaches, sedan chairs and sleds on display.
SHOP
Shopping fans have plenty to enjoy in this regal suburb, with souvenirs, regional food delicacies and antique treasures on offer. Browse:
- La Boutique Cour de: Accessible with a palace ticket, this is possibly the most refined souvenir shop you’ll ever enter featuring tea made with herbs from the palace gardens, fragrant candles fit for a king and other regal mementos.
- Notre-Dame: This historic marketplace is a feast for the eyes, selling everything from artisan chocolate to cured meats and fresh bread. You’ll experience Versailles like a local and it’s perfect if you’re planning a picnic on the palace grounds.
- Passage de la Geôle: This historic cobbled alleyway was once used by local prisoners going for a walk. Today, it’s made for idle wandering. Browse antique shops, galleries and artisan stores selling jewelery, art and furniture.
France’s former royal estate, including the remarkable Palace of Versailles, is easy to visit from Paris and will transport you to one of the most fascinating periods in the country’s history. Marvel at the beauty, but also spend time enjoying the restaurants, shops and museums that have sprung up around it.
